It was beginning to look like the start of the English summer with an away game at Midsomer Norton awaiting us! With another win at the toss, we put the visitors into bat and with openers Ollie Gooding and Joel Parry continuing with their tight bowling spells exerted early pressure on the batting side.
Although we hadn't taken any wickets by the drinks break, we kept ourselves firmly on top with a patient display of bowling with Midsomer Norton having only just gone past the 60 run mark at 20 overs. That patience shown by the team proved invaluable as Sam Athay created the break-through that we were after, and from there the wickets began to fall!
With the seamers having setting the tone, the spinning duo of Louis Mancini and George Wood continued piling on the pressure. A fantastic spell of bowling from Louis ensured he picked up his second 4 wicket haul of the season ending up with figures of 4-37 backed up by George with 2 wickets of his own. It was very pleasing to see another comprehensive display in the field and with the ball.
Midsomer Norton ended their innings by setting us a target of 157-7.
After a couple of tricky weeks with the bat, the hard work being put in during the week was paying off. Opener Sam Athay led the way with a solid performance remaining unbeaten with 65 runs to his name. With supporting roles from the other batsman, Noah Davis added 32 runs of his own to the total, and a flourish at the end by Jack Betenson took us to victory in style finishing off the game with a 6! The game being won with the loss of only 2 wickets in the 33rd over, we remained in firm control throughout.
The patience displayed by the players in the field showed great maturity and the confidence in our collective abilities. Backed up by our strongest batting display to date, there are great signs emerging at this early stage of the season. Even though it is early, as a captain is fantastic to see the consistency beginning to show in the performances being displayed by the squad. And so we turn our attention to next week, and look forward to the game against Bohemians CC at Combe Park.
